Meet the MOST: the Macramé Owl Sanctuary Team

The Macramé Owl Sanctuary was founded in 2008 and includes Annie Zalezsak (aka Annie Zed) as Manager and Director (MOST-MAD), and Vivienne Foley as Rehabilitation Expert (MORE).

Soon after, Greg became our Macramé Owl Welfare Rescue Operations Nurse (MOWRON) along with his Apprentice MOWRON, Ciaran.

In 2010, Zoë Jones joined the team as Macramé Owl Jolly Organizer (MOJO). We are always on the lookout for ‘special’ people to join our team. Check out our Volunteer Recruitement page!

Annie Zalezsak, Macramé Owl Sanctuary Team – Manager and Director (MOST-MAD)

Annie learned to appreciate and value the Macramé Owl much later in life.

“For years, I thought they were goofy and silly. I dread to think I may have shunned a Macramé Owl or two along the path of my life. When I met Viv, and learned of her reverence for the Macramé Owl, I began to see through her eyes, the beauty and magnificence that these wonderful creatures imbue. I’m hooked!”

Annie has since made it her priority to do all she can to save the Macramé Owl and aid its plight.

“I want the Macramé Owl to be around for future generations to enjoy… or endure… like we did, in the 60s and 70s.”

Vivienne Foley, Macramé Owl Rehabilitation Expert

Viv brings tremendous valuable experience, having managed an Animal Care Centre in North Wales for 10 years.

“I’ve always adored owls, but the Macramé Owl has stolen my heart from a very early age. My first ‘encounter’ with a Macramé Owl was one of complete and utter joy,” recalls Viv, in a moment of reminiscing.

“My mother had lovingly adopted a small Dotty Spotty Macramé Owlet which I could hang around my neck as a talisman and I thought it was wonderful! From then on, my love of all things Macramé Owl has grown beyond belief. It truly is a way of life”.

“My absolute triumph and miracle was to meet up with Annie, who has now also embraced the love, enthusiasm and overwhelming devotion for the Macramé Owl. Together we want to succeed in bringing back the majestic Macramé Owl from the verge of extinction.”

Zoë Jones, Macramé Owl Jolly Organizer (MOJO)

Zoë has a special commitment to ensuring that Macramé Owls really enjoy life to the fullest.

Zoë explains: “When I first heard about how many Macramé Owls are blatantly rejected, and how their contributions to society are so absolutely disregarded, I got quite angry. I mean, what is this world coming to? I could not idly stand by knowing the plight of the Macramé Owl was being ignored.

“Like Gandhi said, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. So that’s why I now make it a priority to respect and cherish every moment I spend with our Macramé Owl Residents. Because that’s the kind of world I want to live in. WITTOSOMO!”

WITTOSOMO is our chanting motto. It stands for: Whatever It Takes To Save Our Macramé Owls.

Greg Foley, Macramé Owl Welfare Rescue Operations Nurse (MOWRON)

Greg answered the call of duty when an emergency arose with a difficult Macramé Owl rescue mission. It was all about to go wrong.

“At first, I wanted no part of it,” says Greg. “But once you see an unfortunate Macramé Owl in a dire circumstance, you cannot help but rush in to be the hero. I wanted to set a good example for my son, too. Teach him about values, responsibility and respect for all members of the community, even if they are inanimate.”

Ciaran Foley, Apprentice MOWRON

Ciaran has developed fantastic skills through Greg’s coaching.

“When I was younger, I saw my dad handling a really mean and nasty Macramé Owl. I was proper scared. But dad said the Macramé Owl was just really frightened because it had been abused in the past, and that if I just talk to it softly and don’t make any sudden movements, it would be okay. So I did. And he calmed right down. And then, he actually smiled at me! I knew I could help more Macramé Owls someday, so that’s why I wanted to become an Apprentice MOWRON.”

Amith Perera and Iggy Oct 2011

Amith Perera, Macramé Owl Anti-Poaching Enforcement Regulator (MOAPER)

As a reformed Macramé Owl poacher, Amith brings insight and experience to create inter-species peace and understanding.

“One day, I shot a Great Wooden Hoop Macramé Owl. For years, this variety had been my most sought-after trophy. But a meek and sombre “whoooo whoooo” stopped me in my tracks. I realized I had shot a mother Macramé Owl. I had to rethink my entire life. I had to take full responsibility for my actions. I vowed, there and then, to never, ever harm another Macramé Owl again. I now devote my life to protecting all Macramé Owls from harm.”

You can read Amith’s story in greater detail on our blog.

Genny Campbell Oct 2011

Genny Campbell, Macramé Owl Coffee and Baked Edibles Advisor/Nutritiionist (MOCABEAN)

Genny brings her motherly, nurturing nature to the team. As a coffee connoisseur and home chef, she advises our Macramé Owl staff and carers on the menus Macramé Owls most love: coffee and cakes.

“There is nothing more heart-warming than seeing a happily satisfied Macramé Owl nourished by a delicious meal that they truly enjoy.”

Working together as the MOST (Macramé Owl Sanctuary Team)

Viv and Annie are pictured here with Sherman, one of our success stories.

Viv says macra’mé owl, and Annie says ma’cramé owl. Both pronunciations are correct.

With Viv’s sensitivity to the issues affecting Macramé Owls in our society today; Annie’s ability to spread the word; Zoë’s enthusiastic dedication; Greg and Ciaran’s skill with handling; Amith’s nabbing of poachers; Genny’s domestic nurturing; as a team, we are determined to save… nay, revive!… the glorious and majestic Macramé Owl!

Yes. We are doing this partly for fun and humour. We’re just as passionate about laughing and making others laugh, as we are about Macramé Owls. There really is a Sanctuary, we really do rescue Macramé Owls, and all our information originates from factual data (though we admit, we do have a tendency to embellish).
